g. Improve physical health to the extent possible.

Visit your doctor regularly. If you have health problems, check with your doctor about diet and exercise options. Eat right and get plenty of exercise.

It's really interesting that increasing your health reduces stress. I wonder if this has anything to do with aerobic exercise that's mentioned later in this training. (aerobics = physiological change that reduces stress)

I hcan tell a real difference in my stress level when I exercise regularly. It's amazing how much better I feel about a situation and how much better i deal with it when I am exercising. Lately I havent kept up with my routine and I can tell you it has been much more difficult dealing with things.

I agree, if I don't get physcial exercise then I don't sleep as well and then I start to stress! It is a nasty cycle! I try my best to get exercise, even though I have 2 small children and care for 2 more small children. After I am done with my daycare, I load up my 2 kids in the doulble jogging stroller and off we go!

This principal has got me through many over the top stresses. I love to run, and when things get bad, I love to run more. I have been trying to instill this concept in my children. The older ones are all exercisers now. My college age daughter had some serious health issues, and now that she has worked hard to have a daily exercise, sleep, and healthy food and water routine she is doing so much better!

That's wonderful, it can make such a difference and aerobic exercises can be especially important. She may find some of the information here helpful: http://www.weightlossmiracleshake.info/Index_JLS0.php

Also when I couldn't do strenuous aerobic exercise, when I was pregnant with twins, I still bellydanced! It was very soothing and helped me feel connected with them. And I liked to dance with my daughters when they were babies!

Never really thought much about it myself, but right now as I sit here and think about when I WAS exercising, when the session was over I would take a tired. Yes, I would be panting but my mind would be clear. And, I already knew that a healthy heart is gained through exercise so that ALONE cuts down on worrying about your heart.

For some crazy reason, this one is so much easier said then done for me! I think almost daily about getting some "me" time in to exercise but "stuff" seems to always get in the way! I will have to review the Goal setting section and hopefully schedule at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise a few times a week! Ack I cant wait to start implementing so many of these stress reducing ideas!

Aerobic exercise does release endorphins, which will help stress. Taking care of your health, including getting enough sleep, eating nutritious food & taking time for yourself, all help stress level.

I don't agree with everything in the article about 5 Habits for Weight Loss, like weighing yourself everyday or in the thinking that drinking weight loss shakes is long term solution for maintaining weight loss. Any changes need to be permanent lifestyle changes you can continue for the rest of your life.

Gwenevere,
You are absolutely correct. It is about lifestyle changes. The 5 Habits are completely and exclusively about lifestyle changes. One of those habits is breakfast. There is a great deal of research behind the importance of breakfast. I go into it in more detail in my book on the 5 habits. Breakfast for me happens to be a shake/smoothie that takes care of a number of nutritional needs; however, that shake/smoothie is not one of the habits. I lost about 115 lbs over about a year and have maintained that weight loss for about two years now. My A1c at last measurement was 5.0 and all of my blood counts were within normal range, a significant change for me from how I was over a space of about 30 years. I also know of a number of people who have used the shake/smoothie and done well with it, but that was because they had similar issues as I have had. I have drank a variation of the shake/smoothie about 90% of the mornings for the last three years; however, I reiterate that the important habit is a healthy breakfast, not this specific shake/smoothie.
